WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT LYING?
- Analyze why people lie:
- To gain something.
- Prov. 19:22 – What is desired in a man is kindness,
And a poor man is better than a liar.

- To keep themselves from getting into trouble.
- To avoid hurting someone else’s feelings.
- To gain something.
- Lying is selfish.
- James 3:14 – But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
- It aims to avoid consequences, inconveniences, or awkward circumstances.
- Lying hurts others.
- How do you feel when you learn you’ve been lied to?
- Sometimes it is used as a form of spite or vengeance.
- cf. Prov. 10:18 – Whoever hides hatred has lying lips,
And whoever spreads slander is a fool. - Prov. 17:4 – An evildoer gives heed to false lips;
A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.
