WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT LYING?

1. Analyze why people lie:
   1. To gain something.
      1. Prov. 19:22 – What is desired in a man is kindness,
         And a poor man is better than a liar.
   2. To keep themselves from getting into trouble.
   3. To avoid hurting someone else’s feelings.
2. Lying is selfish.
   1. James 3:14 – But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
   2. It aims to avoid consequences, inconveniences, or awkward circumstances.
3. Lying hurts others.
   1. How do you feel when you learn you’ve been lied to?
   2. Sometimes it is used as a form of spite or vengeance.
      1. cf. Prov. 10:18 – Whoever hides hatred has lying lips,
         And whoever spreads slander is a fool.
      2. Prov. 17:4 – An evildoer gives heed to false lips;
         A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.
