“Preaching Pitfalls: Pride”
HOST: Robert Hatfield
Video of this episode:
Show Notes:
- Charles Spurgeon on pride:
- It is groundless
- It is brainless
- It is the maddest thing that can exist.
- It is ever-changing.
- The seat of pride: the heart
- The consequence of pride: destruction
- Spurgeon on humility:
- “Humility is to think rightly of ourselves.”
- “It is no humility for a man to think less of himself than he ought, though it might rather puzzle him to do that. Some persons, when they know they can do a thing, tell you they cannot; but you do not call that humility”
- Humility is not to say, “I have not this gift,” but it is to say, “I have the gift, and I must use it for my Master’s glory. I must never seek any honor for myself, for what have I that I have not received?”
- The seat of humility: the heart
- True humility goes beneath the surface, to one’s character.
- The result of humility: honor
- “Humility is to think rightly of ourselves.”
- H. E. Phillips offers three ways to cultivate a heart of humility:
- Love – 1 Cor. 13:1-7
- Truth – Constantly examine your motives for preaching from the Bible’s perspective.
- Peace – 1 Thes. 5:13; Col. 3:15; John 8:31-32
- Scriptures to keep before our hearts:
- Romans 12:3
- Galatians 6:3
- 1 Timothy 6:3-4
- James 4:6
