“True Worship Is That Which God Deserves”

David wrote, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (1 Chron. 16:29).There is glory or praise that is due to God. God deserves our worship. In this study, we will consider two reasons why this is the case. We will see that He deserves our praise because He is our Creator and because He is our Redeemer.

David wrote, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (1 Chron. 16:29). Notice that David asked the people to give to God the glory “due” to His name. The word “due” refers to “a verdict pronounced judicially, a sentence or formal decree, divine law, justice” (Strong’s #4941). Justice demands that we give glory to God. He is worthy of it. David declared, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies” (Psa. 18:3).

Although there are others who are worthy of some degree of respect and honor, there is no one other than God who is deserving of worship. God alone is to be worshipped. To Satan’s desire for Jesus to worship him, Jesus answered, “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Mt. 4:10). Even angels, those in the very presence of God, were not to be worshipped. When John fell down to worship an angel, the angel said unto him, “See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God” (Rev. 22:9).

What makes God deserving or worthy of worship? John suggests two things in the book of Revelation that make God worthy of our worship:

First, God is deserving of worship because He made man. John wrote, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev. 4:11). The word “worthy” means “deserving” (Strong’s #514). God is deserving of worship because He made man. Since man has life because of God, it is fitting that man uses his life to give glory and honor to God (Mt. 5:14-16). In like manner, it is fitting that the breath that God breathed into man be used to praise Him. In the one hundred and fiftieth psalm, we read, “Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord” (Psa. 150:6).

In addition to being man’s Creator, we must remember that God is also man’s sustainer. Were it not for his sustaining word, this world would collapse. He is presently upholding everything by his power (Heb. 1:1-3). In a day and age in which many worship themselves, we must remember that “the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves“ (Psa. 100:3).

Second, God is deserving of worship because He redeemed man. Consider what John wrote in the fifth chapter of Revelation: “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever” (Rev. 5:1-14). Notice that God is worthy of worship because He paid the ultimate price to redeem man from sin. We must realize that without what God did for us, we would be “without hope” (Eph. 2:12).

Since God alone made man and redeemed him, He alone is worthy of worship. When we worship God, we are not doing some great thing above and beyond the ordinary. We are simply doing what it is our duty to do (Lk. 17:10). It is fitting that we worship the One in whom we live, move, and have our very being (Acts 17:28). The God that we serve is a great God and is worthy great adoration. Moses wrote, “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is. Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked. For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward: He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen. Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude” (Deut. 10:12-22).

As we get ready to worship this week, let’s remember that God deserves our worship. He is worthy of our worship because he made us and redeemed us.
