“The Effects of Porn on the Brain” (Under the Juniper Tree S7E5)

Under the Juniper Tree Season 7, Episode 5 for Tuesday, February 27, 2018

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (Psalm 139:14)

·         Some have claimed the effects of porn are the same as sex but that’s found to be untrue.

·         Study by Cambridge University neuropsychiatrist Dr Valera Voon showed some interesting things.

o   From the study: Users used porn but didn’t like it

o   Were no longer sexually attracted to partner.

·         Why?

o   Study showed a change in sexual tastes.

o   The brain is “neuroplastic.” It has the ability to change.

o   This change also led to an increase in sexual aggression during the act.

·         What goes on in the brain?

·         A number of chemicals are sent to the brain during the act of viewing porn.

·         Dopamine

o   Consider this somewhat of a reward chemical. Want to know why the first cup of coffee is the best cup of coffee? Dopamine. Want to know why you eventually NEED the first cup of coffee? Dopamine. This chemical gives you a sense of excitement, reward, and so on. It also helps you focus more and gives a sense of craving. During porn consumption, there is a ton of this sent to the brain.

·         Norepinephrine

o   Stress hormone that puts one on edge as if something big is about to happen. You are filled with alertness, heart rate increases, stress level rises — think of it as giving the brain an adrenaline rush.

·         Oxytocin

o   This is the love hormone. This is involved in social recognition and bonding. It lays down memories which last for a time. This is thought to be the chemical that’s released when hugging or cuddling with a spouse. The high levels of oxytocin means the higher levels of prolactin. Why is prolactin important? It counters the effects of dopamine. The problem is that during porn consumption more dopamine is released than prolactin.

·         Endorphines are released to help in creating a high.

·         Serotonin relaxes the body and brings a calm to the system.

·         Porn takes this system that was created by God and rearranges the mind.

·         The purpose behind these chemicals in sex is to form a bond with your spouse.

o   In porn, you end up bonding with it.

o   The amount of dopamine created in your brain literally tires it out.

o   This created the inability to concentrate, exhaustion, and a sincere craving for pornography.

o   The body begins to crave more and more of it but the brain is unable to reach an adequate level of satisfaction.

o   One begins to spend more time with pornography and that has numerous other effects on the body.

·         But that will come next week.
