“Observations from Under the Juniper Tree”
HOST: Andrew Crowe
Show Notes:
-
In the inaugural episode of season 2, Andrew looks into the prophet Elijah, one of the greatest examples of a Biblical person who suffered from depression. This and future studies will look into his background as well as some peripheral information surrounding the text in 1 Kings 19.
Outline of this episode:
-
We will spend some time studying a prophet of the Bible who is known for many things.
o He proved God to be the true God in Israel (1 Kings 18).
o His prayer is an example used by James to show the power that ours can have (James 5:16-17).
o We often do not study another importance period of this prophet’s life.
o He shows us that while we will sometimes be up on the mountain, we may also find ourselves down in the valley.
-
He is the prophet of Elijah and we want to study a little about his time in 1 Kings 19.
o First time we read of him is in 1 Kings 17.
– Nothing is known of his parents.
– Jews think that he is a Levite or a priest.
o A few things have happened up to our point of study (1 Kings 18).
o 1 Kings 19:1-2 – Ahab tells Jezebel what has been done and she gives a threat to Elijah.
o 1 Kings 19:3 – Let’s be honest – we’d probably do the same thing.
o 1 Kings 19:4 – He came to rest himself under the juniper tree.
o It is this Elijah that we want to investigate.
-
He is one of the greatest examples of a Biblical person who suffered from depression.
-
Next week: We will observe some of the symptoms Elijah shows in 1 Kings 19.
