- While we are on the discussion of empathy, we need to discuss some thing we should not do.
- As I mention these things, it should be noted I do not think those who do these things mean to be malicious.
- Never start a statement with “At least…”
- Example: Person’s spouse dies.
- When we say, “At least…” it is as if we are saying, “Do you really have the right to complain?” – It minimizes the problem.
- We sound bit like Hannah’s husband (1 Sam. 1:8).
- Do Not Offer a Solution
- In many instances, people just want a sounding board.
- If you want to offer a solution, ask first.
- “Do you want consolation or a solution?”
- Do Not Rush Them to Make Their Point
- Let the person take their time going over what happened.
- I know we might like the Cliff Notes version better but empathy gives time.
