Ready to Worship Season 7, Episode 11 for Friday, May 4, 2018
This season on Ready to Worship we are examining songs that help to prepare us for worship. This week, we are examining the song, None of Self And All of Thee. I truly believe that this song has a message that every worshipper needs. The song details four attitudes toward self and God – all of self and none of God, some of self and some of God, less of self and more of God, and none of self and all of God. In this podcast, we are going to discuss people who have each of these attitudes.

This season on Ready to Worship we are examining songs that help to prepare us for worship. This week, we are examining the song, None of Self And All of Thee. I truly believe that this song has a message that every worshipper needs.
To get the full effect of the song, let’s begin by considering the words:
- Oh, the bitter pain and sorrow
That a time could ever be,
When I proudly said to Jesus,
“All of self, and none of Thee.”
All of self, and none of Thee,
All of self, and none of Thee,
When I proudly said to Jesus,
“All of self, and none of Thee.” - Yet He found me; I beheld Him
Bleeding on th’ accursed tree,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
“Some of self, and some of Thee.”
Some of self, and some of Thee,
Some of self, and some of Thee,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
“Some of self, and some of Thee.” - Day by day His tender mercy,
Healing, helping, full and free,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
“Less of self, and more of Thee.”
Less of self, and more of Thee,
Less of self, and more or Thee,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
“Less of self, and more of Thee.” - Higher than the highest heaven,
Deeper than the deepest sea,
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered:
“None of self, and all of Thee.”
None of self, and all of Thee,
None of self, and all of Thee,
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered:
“None of self, and all of Thee.”
Which of these four attitudes describe you? All of self, some of self, less of self, or none of self? None of Jesus, some of Jesús, more of Jesús, or all of Jesús? Let’s consider each of these attitudes as it pertains to worship.
All of Self, None of Thee
Have you ever heard anyone say, “Sunday is my day. It’s my day to rest, fish, hunt, sleep late, etc.” Are they not saying, “All of self, none of thee?” It seems to me that they are. After all, the first day, Sunday, is the Lord’s day (Rev. 1:9). It is not my day or your day. It is His day. It is the day when He broke the bands of death for us. It is a day when we remember and praise Him (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:23-29).
Some of Self, Some of Thee
Do you know anyone who comes on Sunday morning, but not on Sunday night? Likely, you do. Are they not saying, “Some of me, some of you?” They give the Lord Sunday morning, but they keep Sunday night for themselves. They split the day 50/50. They even give the Lord the first half. Surely, we can see, even if they can’t, that this isn’t loving God as we should. We are supposed to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mk. 12:30).
Less of Self, More of Thee
I believe that you will agree that things are moving in the right direction. These individuals are thinking less of self and more of the Lord. They have given the Lord controlling interest in their lives. Perhaps, it is as small as 51/49. Maybe, it is as much as 99/1. Whatever the case, they have not surrendered all. They remind me of the rich young ruler (Mt. 19:16-22). Generally, he was a good man. He came to Jesús. He was interested in eternal life. He honored his father and mother. He loved his neighbor as himself. He didn’t commit adultery. He didn’t steal. He didn’t bear false witness. However, he was was still lacking. He needed to sell what he had, give to the poor, and follow Jesús. Sadly, he went away sorrowful because there was still too much of self and too little of the Lord.
None of Self, All of Thee
Finally, we get to the attitude that we should have as we come to worship. This is the attitude that the poor widow had when she came to worship. Unlike the rich young ruler who held some back, the poor widow cast in all (Mk. 12:41-44). For her, it was none of self, all of thee. What about us? Are we denying self (Lk. 9:23)? Is it 50/50 denial? Some of me and some of thee. Is it 60/40 denial? Less of me and more of thee. Both of these denials come up short. There is too much of self and too little of God. The right attitude is none of self and all of thee.
As we get ready to worship this week, let’s not settle for some of self and some of God or less of self and more of God. Let’s be satisfied only with none of self and all of God. We can only worship God fully when we have denied ourselves completely.
