In the sixty-ninth psalm David wrote, “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving” (Psa. 69:30). In the thirty-fourth psalm, David invited others to come and to magnify God with him. We read, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Psa. 34:3). Magnify means “to make great.” Have you ever used a magnifying glass? If so, then you understand a key part of what it means to magnify something. When you magnify something, you make it great. You take something small and you make it larger. You take something that is hard to see and you make it easier to see. Magnification doesn’t actually change the nature of what you’re viewing. It simply makes it appear greater or larger.
Obviously, there is a sense in which we do not make God greater. His greatness is not dependent on us. No amount of praise will add an ounce to His greatness. We can’t add to His power, His wisdom, His holiness, or any of his other attributes by worshipping him. What we do when we magnify God is we exalt him so that others can see and know him. Hopefully, our lives and our worship serve as a magnifying glass. Do you remember the first part of the verse with which we began this study? David wrote, “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving” (Psa. 69:30). To praise God is to magnify him. Do you remember David’s invitation for others to join him in praising God?
We read, “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Psa. 34:3). To magnify the Lord is to exalt His name. It is to make His name great!
As we get ready to worship this week, let’s magnify the Lord together with singing, thanksgiving, and worship. Let’s make His name great!
