Episode Transcript

This season on Ready to Worship, we are examining the “God is” statements of the Bible. Our hope is that we will come to know the God that we worship better. In this podcast, we will examine that “God is jealous.”

The prophet Nahum wrote, “God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies” (Nah. 1:2). I suppose that some might think of God’s jealousy as a bad thing. However, it isn’t. It simply shows that God’s love for us is intense. God is not indifferent toward us. He is not indifferent toward what we do. He loves us with all of His heart and He wants us to love Him in the same way. He pursues us and he wants us to pursue Him. He puts us first, as is evidence by His gift at Calvary, and He wants us to put Him first. It bothers Him when we don’t. In giving the Ten Commandments, He declared,  “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (Ex. 20:3-5). I don’t know about you, but I’m glad that the God that I worship is a jealous God. I’m glad that He cares. I’m glad that He desires my worship (John 4:23). I’m glad that God is jealous of my affection.

As we get ready to worship this week, let’s remember that God is a jealous God. Let’s remember how much He desires that we love Him with all our our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mk. 12:30).
