“God Is Light” (Ready to Worship S6E5)

Ready to Worship Season 6, Episode 5 for Friday, September 29, 2017

On this season of Ready to Worship, we are examining the “God is” statements of the Bible. Our hope is that we come to know the God that we worship better. So far in our studies, we have noticed that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him (Heb. 11:6), that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that God is a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29). In this study, we want to consider that God is light (1 John 1:5).

12:29). In this study, we want to consider that God is light.

John wrote, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).  I especially love the last expression in this verse. In God “is no darkness at all.” James would tell us that with God there is no “variableness, neither shadow of turning” (Jam. 1:17).  God is perfect light. He banishes darkness by His presence. In the book of Revelation, John wrote, “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof” (Rev. 21:23). How could we not worship the one who dispels darkness by His presence? How could we not desire to be in His presence both here and there? The only ones who don’t come to the light are those whose deeds are evil. Jesus declared, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God” (John 3:19-21).

As we get ready to worship this week, let’s remember that God is light. In a world filled with darkness, it is wonderful to worship one in whom there is no darkness at all.
