Light From the Past 010: “Philistines”

Episode #010
For Tuesday, October 28, 2014
“Philistines”

HOST: Dewayne Bryant

Show Notes:

  • In this episode, Dewayne discusses the Philistines and what we can learn from their interactions with Israel in the Old Testament.

Notable Quote:

  • “We have to be careful, because we can treat God like a good luck charm, one that helps us in a tough spot. Or a divine sidekick, waiting for us to give him instructions. Or we treat him like a genie in a lamp. We take the lamp down, give it a rub, and once he’s granted our wish we put it back on the shelf until the next time we need something done.”

Texts for Reflection:

  • 1 Samuel 4:3 – “When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that He may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”

  • 1 Samuel 6:3 – “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it back to Him without a gift; by all means send a guilt offering to Him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why His hand has not been lifted from you.”

  • Isaiah 40:18, 25-26 – “To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him? To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.”
