“Manly Marks: Peace”

• These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts.
• The third “Manly Mark” revealed in the Fruits of the Spirit is peace. The world defines peace as the absence of conflict. To the Christian, supreme peace can be enjoyed even in the midst of trials. (Philippians 4:6-7)
• One of the words translated peace in the New Testament carries with it the idea of being joined. Consequently, peace is found in the individual when he is joined in mind. Peace is found between God and man when man aligns his will with God’s will. Peace is found in the church when the body possesses one mind.

“At the Heart of Worship”

• Jews attended three feasts in Jerusalem every year: Passover (Spring), Pentecost (Early Summer), and Tabernacles (Autumn) (Exodus 23:14-19)
  
• Traditionally they travelled in family or community groups to the city of David (Luke 2:41-52).
• As they journey they sang the “Psalms of Ascent” (Psalm 120-134) to prepare for worship.
• Psalm 131 was written by David and records his conversation with God about his heart. Perhaps he had been accused of pride or pompousness. Whatever the case, David is honest with the Lord about his heart, a heart that all men should seek when they worship God.
• There are three things seen at the heart of worship in these three verses: humility, happiness, and hope.
• At the Heart of Worship There is Humility (1)
  • His heart was guarded against pride. (1a)
  • His heart was guarded against preumption. (1b)
• At the Heart of Worship There is Happiness (2)
  • The Jews typically weaned their children at 3 years old.
  • A child that once wept for his mother’s milk will rest contentedly upon his mother’s chest after he is weaned.
  • Our souls rest contentedly in the hands of the Lord when we are weaned from self-sufficiency, self-will, and self-seeking.
• At the Heart of Worship There is Hope (3)
  • When our humility and satisfaction at the hands of the Lord are conjoined they bring peace and hope.

“Manly Marks: Joy”

•  By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as “the Fruits of the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
• These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts.
• The second “Manly Mark” given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in this list is joy. Joy is “a cheerfulness or calm delight” that is not touched by the cares of life.
• There is no greater picture of Christian joy than the writings of the aposlte Paul in the book of Philippians. While imprisoned by the evil ruler Nero, Paul wrote the greatest treatise on joy in the New Testament. Eighteen times in fourteen verses the apostle mentions joy or rejoicing.
• The key verse of Philippians is 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”
• Joyful Men are Christians
  • Philippians 3:1, 3; 4:4, 10
• Joyful Men Have the Mind of Christ
  • Philippians 2:5; 1:6, 11; 2:13
• Joyful Men are Confident
  • Paul uses the word translated “confidence” six times in this book on Joy. Our confidence comes from Christ. (Phil. 1:6, 14, 25; 2:24; 3:3, 4)
  • Philippians 2:24; 3:3
• Joyful Men Build Connections
  • Philippians 4:1

“Worshipping in the Depths of Life”

“Where Are You?”

• God never asks questions for information. Instead, He asks questions for man’s contemplation.
• In Genesis 3:9, God asked Adam an interesting question: “Where are you?”
  • God knew where Adam and Eve were, but wanted them to consider what sin had done to their relationship with Him.
• We need to answer this question for ourselves: Where are we?

1. Someone may answer, “I’m in the church.”
   • SALVATION is found here (Colossians 1:13-14; Romans 6:11, 23; 8:1-2).
   • SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS are found here (Ephesians 1:3).
   • SECURITY (hope in Christ) is found here (1 Corinthians 15:19; Hebrews 6:18-19).
2. Someone may answer, “I’m in the world.”
   • This is a COMBATING environment (James 1:27; 4:4; 1 John 3:13).
   • This is a CORRUPTING environment (2 Peter 1:4).
   • This is an environment based on CRAVING (1 John 2:15-17).
3. Someone may answer, “I’m in the church, but I’m unfaithful.”
   • This is a DANGEROUS lifestyle (2 Peter 2:20-22; Galatians 5:1).
   • This is a DEFICIENT lifestyle (Galatians 4:9).
   • This is a DECEPTIVE lifestyle (1 Timothy 6:10; Galatians 1:6-9; 2 Timothy 4:10; Hebrews 3:12-13).

• Can you answer this question by saying that you are a faithful member of the Lord’s church?

“Salvation is Redemption”

“Manly Marks: Love”

• By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as “the Fruits of the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
  
• These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts.
• The first of these “Manly Marks” is “love.” This type of love involves considering others, their attributes, and their character, out of an intelligent estimation of their worth. This type of love isn’t bound to emotions; rather, it transcends them. Love seeks the best interest of another and puts others before itself.
• Here’s a picture of what love is all about: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10; cf. Romans 5:8)
• A description of love is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
• Real Men Love Christ (1 Corinthians 16:22)

• Jews attended three feasts in Jerusalem every year: Passover (Spring), Pentecost (Early Summer), and Tabernacles (Autumn) (Exodus 23:14-19)
  
• Traditionally they travelled in family or community groups to the city of David (Luke 2:41-52).
• As they journey they sang the “Psalms of Ascent” (Psalm 120-134) to prepare for worship.
• This psalm has many references to farming and horticulture.
• Though the psalmist faced great greif, he was reminded that he had a reason to glory.

  4. Be an example in your faith.
  5. Be an example in your purity.
• You have big shoes to fill. You have the best job in the world. Don’t despise yourself for your youth. Set the example in your speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.

    1. Christians are called to live in the world, but not be of the world
    2. Christians are called to do the following in the world

       • Be a beacon of light to the world (Matt. 5:13).
       • Maintain contact with the world (1 Cor. 5:9-10)

    3. Christians are not to be conformed to the world for such makes one an enemy of God.
  • The present condition of the church
  • How are Christians to respond to worldliness?
    1. Worldliness is not worth it.

    4. The Christian’s hope is not in the present world, but in heaven.

“Replace Wickedness with Righteousness”

• This psalm is closely related to Psalm 127. Psalm 127 shows ferverous work without God. Psalm 128 shows the quiet blessings of an ordered life.
• The psalm is divided into three couplets. 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6. Each couplet shows the peace that praise and its attendant life brings in a different area of life.
• Peace in the Heart (Psalm 128:1-2)
  • Reverence – “feareth the Lord”
  • Obedience – “walketh in his ways”
  • Hard Work – “labor of thine hands”
• Peace in the Home (Psalm 128:3-4)
  • Wife – “a fruitful vine in thine house”
  • Children – “olive plants round about thy table”
• Peace in the Host (Psalm 128:5-6)
